The shop

A small case, looked after by one person.

Bransey Jewelry is a new shop. I sell costume, vintage, and antique jewelry, and a short shelf of estate finds — a doll, a collectible, a mirror, a box — from the same sales where the jewelry turns up.

I would rather describe a piece plainly than dress it up in a century it did not live through.

What is on the table

Jewelry is the heart of it: sterling chains, evil-eye bracelets, charms, cameos, dress clips, the odd filigree bangle. Some of it is precious metal and marked. Some of it is costume, and I say so. Estate finds are the other things I bring home when they are intact enough to explain.

The catalogue is small on purpose. I would rather list twelve honest pieces than a hundred I cannot stand behind.

What “estate finds” means

An estate sale is a house being emptied. I walk those sales, and the occasional tag sale, and buy what I can describe without guessing. “Estate” here means sourced that way. It does not mean every object is a hundred years old. When a doll is made in an antique style but the porcelain is later, the description says so.

How a piece gets listed

I clean gently, with a cloth, and I polish silver only when tarnish is hiding the detail. I measure. I look for marks. If I am not sure the metal is sterling, I write “silver-tone” or “unmarked.” I do not restore a piece in a way that hides its age.

Photographs and the fine print live on the eBay listing. This website is the front door, not the cash register. There is no cart here.

Condition, in plain words

I use four words. They are mine, not a laboratory scale.

Mint
Unworn, or as close as a vintage piece gets. No visible wear. If I mention a tag or a box, it is actually there.
Excellent
Light wear only. It looks fresh at arm’s length. Any mark is small, and I name it.
Very good
Honest use: a soft scratch, faint tarnish in a crevice, a tag with a crease. The piece is complete and still attractive.
Good
Wear you can see. Nothing is broken that I have not already told you about. The price reflects it.

If something is cracked, repaired, or missing its mate — a single dress clip, for example — that fact is in the first lines, not buried under a compliment.

A new shop, on purpose

There is no long biography on this page, and no press clippings. Bransey Jewelry is just getting started. I am not going to invent a founding year or a list of awards to make the stall look older than it is.

The catalogue will grow as I list pieces. If you are looking for something particular, write to me. I would rather tell you I do not have it than pretend the case is bigger than it is.
